Creating a 3D Sculpture from a 2D Artwork
3 weeks

For this assignment, you will select a famous piece of 2D artwork and create a 3D sculpture of an interesting object in the artwork.

Your piece should be at least 7" in any direction--the smaller you make it, the more quickly fine details will dry out.

Examples:
Create a sculpture based on the bed in Pablo Picasso's painting!

Recreate the apple in Rene Magritte's Son of Man picture.

Make a sculpture of the sleeping being/face/clock in Salvador Dali's painting.

Your object must also be painted/glazed to match the color in the artwork. This will be your final sculptural project for this class (not your final assignment, however), so do your best work!

Tiki Totem Mugs
March 27th through April 5th

A tiki man is an ancient god or warrior which represented certain nature forces in the hawaiian culture.
There are 4 main hawaiian gods which each had specific strengths:-Ku: the god of war -Lono: the god of agriculture, peace and time -Kane: the god of creations, sunlight and water-Kanaloa: the god of the sea
The tiki statues were used by pacific islander locals to scare off unexpected and unwanted intruders from entering and potentially harming their territories.  Tiki statues are highly respected, still remain within our cultures and used mostly for island decor.

You will begin this project by creating a 1/4" slab. From this slab you will create a mug-like cylinder approximately 9" tall and 4" wide.

Make sure you score and slip the base and side seam VERY well!

Your mug should have well-crafted, high-relief details. Pay attention to adding different textures to the body, eyes, nose, etc...

Preliminary sketching and planning is a requirement for this project. You must show me a detailed sketch before you begin your project. When your project is ready to bisque fire, your sketch must be inside the mug.

Questions to ask yourself before you begin this project:
  • How will I create a tiki face that stands out from those of my classmates?
  • What steps do I need to take to make sure this is more successful and creative than my past projects?
  • How will I create a handle that incorporates good design and looks unified with the rest of my tiki?

This project is worth 200 points and must be ready to start drying for the bisque fire by April 5th.
